We happened upon Urzi’s Italian Market after a second failed attempt at going to Gioia’s Deli . We were both in the mood for sandwiches and after driving around for a bit we spied a street that looked promising. Urzi’s is nestled quietly in The Hill across the street from St. Louis’s famed Cunetto’s (which opens at 5 and for which people were lined up outside at 4!). It also sits across the street from a Save-A-Lot, but that is neither here nor there. Urzi’s has been a St. Louis favorite for almost 60 years and specializes in pre-made Italian foods (pizza dough, fresh bread, etc) and “hard to find” Italian imports (sauces, wine, cookies). Located at the back of the market is a modest deli counter with only 6 things on the menu and all of them are sandwiches.

This post is for parents and students alike (but mostly parents). We have been chugging away rather nicely on our movie projects. Today (October 18th) marked the last day of the first stage of movie production; Pre Production. In this stage, students:

were divided into groups of 4 or 5
were told to come up with a name and logo for their group
created a weblog to chronicle the group’s progress
were given the guidelines for writing a script
created an original script
rehearsed their scripts in preparation for the second stage of film making: Production

It’s been hectic, but somehow we’ve managed to come this far. In case you are interested I’ve linked all of the student blogs below. Stay tuned for more updates as we go along.

Blog Assignment #1: Create your Blog Using WordPress

Technology Co-ordinators, here are your instructions for setting up your blogs. BTW I am not sure why the numbering is the way it is. Let me know if you get too confused.

First you need to open up a new tab in Firefox, your web browser. To do this, press CTRL-t. This enables you to be on two web pages at the same time.

In the new tab, go to wordpress.com . You can now switch in between the two tabs by clicking on either one in the Tab Bar. Try it out.

On wordpress.com, click on “Start your WordPress Blog”

Choose a username. Please note that this username will become part of the URL for your blog. Your username should be the name of your production group. Your blog URL will be http://yourproductionname.wordpress.com

Enter your email address
1. Check yes to “the terms of service”
2. Select “gimme a blog!”
3. Click “next”

On the next screen
1. Leave the Blog Domain alone
2. Create a title for your blog (your production group name)
3. Your language is English
4. Click Signup

Activation
1. Open a new tab by pressing CTRL-t.
2. Go to your email and activate your blog by clicking the link that is sent to you.
3. When you activate your blog, you will be given your password. Please write this down and don’t lose it. You will change your password later.

You now have your very own blog!

Login
1. click on your blog name/link on the right-hand side of your screen. This will take you to what is called your “Dashboard”–this is the place from which you can control your blog–writing posts, making edits, changing the look of your blog, etc.

To change your password, go to Users and Update password. Make your password something you will remember.

Click on “Presentation” and then choose a theme. This is what your blog will look like.

You now have a blog, and I need the URL or blog address. (http://yourproductionname.wordpress.com). Your blog address appears at the top of browser screen in the Address Bar. Please copy this address and email it to me (ask me for my email address). You should open a new tab to do this.

You may now switch back to your blog tab and compose your first post. You should have one post by the time class is finished.

Awesome (FREE) Music Resource

This website comes courtesy of Kevin Durham in my third period. He found one of the best music sound effects websites I’ve ever seen. No joke. Typically services like the one on this site require you to sign up and then they ask for your email address. Which they then use to spam your email account for the rest of your life. This one doesn’t. And that is truly a beautiful thing. Free music. From the few tracks I downloaded this isn’t the typical free music you usually get either. This is full band with real instrumentation.

Aside from the fact that they don’t harvest email addresses, one of the features of this site that places it way above most other sites is that you can search by STYLE and FEEL. So… say you have a really dramatic scene and you think it would go well with an “Acid Jazz” type song….they have a category for that….and not only that, but there are a whopping 11 free songs in that category (it may not seem like much, but when you typically only use snippets of songs, you don’t really need much).

Some FEEL categories I liked:

Chill/Laid Back
Dark/Mysterious
Driving
Ethereal
Epic

So check out this site if you are looking for that perfect background music or need a song that is free of copyright.

KFC from space…a new marketing strategy?

This has been circulating the net for a while, but I thought I would post it here because it has to do with marketing and advertising.

Kentucky Fried Chicken (owned by the same people who own Taco Bell and Pizza Hut) has just changed their logo. The new logo still features Colonel Sanders, but looks just a bit more updated than the 1997 version. The colors have been tweaked from “straight red” to a more maroon or brick red (possibly to catch new customers) and the lines of the logo are a lot simpler than the any of the previous logos. I think its interesting that people sitting in an office somewhere make these decisions and they are so slight… a tilted image here, color reconfiguration there….but you can hardly deny that the new logo doesn’t look more modernized.

Here are also some pics of logos from past years (the company has only changed its logo five times in the past 50 years!)

And how do they plan on unveiling this new logo? Well, apparently they have constructed a giant logo made up of “6,000 red, 14,000 white, 12,000 eggshell, 5,000 beige and 28,000 black” tiles. Pretty impressive. They seem to be trying capitalize on the popularity of programs like Google Earth….which is really the only way (other than flying directly above it) that you would be able to see it.
