We happened upon Urzi’s Italian Market after a second failed attempt at going to Gioia’s Deli .  We were both in the mood for sandwiches and after driving around for a bit we spied a street that looked promising.  Urzi’s is nestled quietly in The Hill across the street from St. Louis’s famed Cunetto’s (which opens at 5 and for which people were lined up outside at 4!).  It also sits across the street from a Save-A-Lot, but that is neither here nor there.

Urzi’s has been a St. Louis favorite for almost 60 years and specializes in pre-made Italian foods (pizza dough, fresh bread, etc) and “hard to find” Italian imports (sauces, wine, cookies).  Located at the back of the market is a modest deli counter with only 6 things on the menu and all of them are sandwiches.

Scriptwriting and Blogging

This post is for parents and students alike (but mostly parents). We have been chugging away rather nicely on our movie projects. Today (October 18th) marked the last day of the first stage of movie production; Pre Production. In this stage, students:

  • were divided into groups of 4 or 5
  • were told to come up with a name and logo for their group
  • created a weblog to chronicle the group’s progress
  • were given the guidelines for writing a script
  • created an original script
  • rehearsed their scripts in preparation for the second stage of film making: Production

It’s been hectic, but somehow we’ve managed to come this far. In case you are interested I’ve linked all of the student blogs below. Stay tuned for more updates as we go along.

Parent Update

166123-xclock-digital-clock-screen-saver.jpg

We have been chugging along rather nicely.  It is officially the last week of production and things are well on their way to being completed on time.  It’s about this time in the semester that I start worrying that the movies will not get finished.  Though, I think partly through the determination of the students and starting early on post production techniques that we will be okay….barring any major upset or catastrophic event.

Since the last update, we have been continuing to practice editing, which has been going well.  Though we got off to a slow start, the students gradually began to grasp the concept.  We watched a great video (Lasse Gjertsen – Amateur) in class–that I just happened upon–that spoke a great deal about editing and its importance in film.  Lasse Gjertsen creates a song and video piece composed solely of fractions of a second’s worth of material.  He achieved this through some very careful and tedious editing.  I can’t even imagine how long it took him.  Anyway, the thing that I took away from the video (and hopefully the students did too) was that editing is the process of looking at raw material and hacking away at it and arranging it until you have something that is polished and clean.  Kind of like sculpting, I would imagine.  It was very enlightening (at least to me :)

–Make sure you check out the video (link above).  It is very interesting–

The students have also, of course, been filming their videos.  It’s a lot of fun to watch them film and make decisions regarding lighting and camera angles…They are very creative when they are allowed to be.  I love hearing them use the terminology that we have been studying in class (low angle, POV, Extreme Long Shot).  I like when they run up against problems with a scene and figure out how to solve them.  They’re not all Scorceses, but they’re at least Chris Columbus.

There are also little tasks that we have been completing.  Things such as:  scheduling, logging shots, writing up call sheets, brainstorming sound effects, and much more.  I think the students are finding out the meaning behind the adage, “The Devil’s in the details.”

Anyhow….as always, feel free to contact me regarding anything that you are wondering or any questions you may have.  Take a second to browse the rest of the posts and see what other things I might not have mentioned are happening.  And when you’re finished….leave me a comment so that I can tell who was here.

Until next time….

YouTube Posts

So, I haven’t really been planning on posting Youtube content on this site. I don’t have any personal problem with it. I just hadn’t been thinking of it. But, after watching the short film yesterday in class ( Lasse Gjertsen – Amateur ) I think that there might actually be some good stuff out there…I have a feeling that I will have to sift through some not so good (quality wise) stuff before I find it though…  Stay Tuned for my search results!

I typed in film making in the search bar on YouTube and got the following video.  This guy has a really honest, no frills attitude about film making that I really like.  I also like the part where he mentions not needing “thousands of dollars worth of equipment” to be a film maker….that’s how I feel every day.  (Though it sure would be nice to have the money :) )

Free Sound FX Resources

Since we are putting some of our focus on sound effects, here is a great link for finding (free) sounds.  They have pretty nearly any sound effect you could ever need.

Slide Shows…kind of.

Well, I found a Slide Show Sharing (that’s a lot of “shs”) website, but the type of blog I have does not support embedding the file in a post (like othe blogs and Youtube)….so, I think I will just post the link to the shows and let you all click through.

The name of the site is SlideShare.net and it was created to do exactly what I am trying to do, but the page is new and its features aren’t really compatible with other sites yet (hopefully in the future)…that said, it does seem to be pretty useful.

Let me know if the link does not work.
